Hotel History: Catskill Mountain Resort Hotels
This is the story of a place of 250 rectangular miles, about an hour and a 1/2 drive northwest of New York City, which has become a hotel phenomenon over the last century, not like any other. Since the sub-Civil War years, the area has attracted vacationers because of its visual attraction and accessibility through two railroad strains, the Ontario & Western and the Ulster & Delaware. The new arrivals came as far as the Catskill Mountains to settle, farm, and break out of the unhealthy environment of urban tenement existence.
The message returned to New York’s Lower East Side: the air became clean and fresh, the scenery changed beautifully, and the weather in July and August became cooler than the metropolis. The hotels, bungalow colonies, summer camps, and self-catered boarding houses were largely frequented by families of center and working magnificence Jewish New Yorkers. Some of these Catskill accommodations have been converted from farms that immigrants had started in the early 1900s. The vicinity catered to Jewish families, offering kosher ingredients, bedrooms, and entertainment. In its heyday, as many as 500 hotels catered to guests of various earnings. Some of the bigger motels had producers, including Moss Hart at the Flagler and Neil Simon on the Taminent. They achieved scenes from Kingsley’s Dead End, Odets’ Waiting For Lefty, or musicals like the International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union’s Pins and Needles.
