The primary consciousness is that sandpipers, plovers, whimbrels, godwits, dowitchers, turnstones, dunlin, phalaropes, and knots. There are a few chook banding pastimes through the summertime as well.
“While the primary cognizance is on shorebirds, we note other birds,” Wiegersma stated. “We see raptors consisting of bald eagles, ospreys, harriers, and falcons. Nelson’s and Le Conte’s sparrows were highlights closing summertime. For my part, I want to look at the dragonflies and smaller fish, and there are black bears. As a protection precaution, one path closed for a while, closing due to bears.”
The vicinity is far-flung. The crews take the Ontario Northland Railway’s Polar Bear Express from Cochrane to Moosonee, after which they’ve helicoptered about 50 km north to the Longridge Point and Little Piskwamish Point birding camps. Although most shorebirds that relax and refuel at James Bay will fly over southern Ontario, some will touch down in August in south Ontario.
